Minister calls on law enforcers to be tough on alcohol consumption
On Sunday morning a drunk driver who was trying to avoid police road and it collided into a TMPD vehicle. The accident took place in Pretoria West and three officer’s died on the spot.
A female passenger travelling with the drunk driver was lucky enough to escape with her life. However she sustained some injuries and is recovering in the hospital. Empty and full bottles of alcohol were found in the vehicle.
This accident did not go down well with Bheki Cele. He is disappointed that people are already abusing alcohol and he already does not like the use of alcohol. He has condemned alcohol abuse and urged police officers to be more vigilant in punishing those driving under the influence.
As well as those who cause accidents. If it was up to the Minister he would have the ban on alcohol reimposed again.
Bheki Cele went on to say “The lives of these young officers were cut short by a man who chose to drink and act irresponsibly. While the alcohol ban has been lifted under Lockdown Level 2, it still remains the responsibility of those who consume alcohol to do so, without putting themselves and those around them in danger.”
“If alcohol was consumed at home as per the government’s directive, the loss of lives could have been avoided. While this incident is a great loss to the Metro Police department, police officers will continue in their numbers, to enforce the law and clamp down hard on reckless behaviour brought on by alcohol abuse.”
