South Africa continues to mourn following the devastating scholar transport accident that occurred on Monday, 19 January 2026, in Vanderbijlpark. The tragic incident claimed the lives of young learners whose futures were filled with promise, hope, and endless possibilities. Their untimely passing has left families shattered, school communities in deep grief, and the nation united in sorrow.
These learners were more than just pupils attending school each morning. They were beloved sons and daughters, siblings, classmates, and friends. They carried dreams of becoming leaders, professionals, and contributors to their communities. Their laughter echoed in classrooms, their ambitions inspired teachers, and their presence brought joy to those around them. Today, their absence is painfully felt across the Vaal and beyond.

The lives lost in this heartbreaking tragedy include learners from several schools in the Vanderbijlpark area, spanning different ages and grades, a painful reminder that tragedy does not discriminate. Among those remembered are Buhle Radebe (Grade 11), Bokamoso Mokhobo (Grade 8), and Sibongile Madonsela (Grade 10) from Hoërskool Vanderbijlpark. Vaal High School mourns the loss of Grade 8 learner Leano Moiloa, while Oakwood Primary School grieves for young Lesego Sefatsa, just in Grade 2.
The tragedy also took the lives of Letlotlo Katlego Makwe (Grade 2) from Vaal Triangle Primary School, Ofentse Jayden Vinger (Grade 1) from Oliver Lodge Primary School, and Lindokuhle Mabaso (Grade 5) from Noordhoek Primary School. El-Shaddai Christian School lost four learners: Pheello Motaung and Puleng Maphalla (both Grade 11), Naledi Motsapi (Grade 10), and Bohlale Lekekela (Grade 1). Each name represents a story cut short and a family forever changed.

To the educators and classmates left behind, may the memories of these learners’ smiles and kindness give you strength in the days ahead.
