A 10-year-old girl is recovering in hospital following a violent pit bull attack in Galeshewe earlier this week, an incident that has sparked public outrage and opened a criminal investigation.

The attack occurred on Tuesday evening on Phutane Street, when the child was reportedly playing outside with other children. According to police reports, the pit bull broke free and viciously mauled the girl, leaving her with severe injuries to her face and head. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she is currently receiving medical care.

The shocking nature of the incident quickly caught public attention after graphic images of the girl’s injuries circulated on social media. The photos prompted widespread condemnation, with many users calling for stricter regulations on dangerous dog breeds like pit bulls. Others, however, criticized the distribution of such sensitive images, urging the public to respect the child’s privacy and dignity.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock confirmed that a criminal case of negligence has been opened against the dog’s owner. The case falls under the Animal Matters Amendment Act, which allows for prosecution if an animal causes harm due to the owner’s failure to control it. Penalties can include a fine or imprisonment of up to two years.

Kock explained that the SPCA acted swiftly following the incident and removed the pit bull from the property the next day. The organization is now working closely with the police during the investigation.

“This tragic event serves as a reminder that pet owners must ensure their animals are not a danger to the public,” said Kock. “Failure to do so can result in both criminal and civil consequences.”

Beyond the legal action, the victim’s family may also pursue a civil lawsuit to claim compensation for medical expenses, emotional trauma, and future treatment resulting from the attack.

The police have strongly condemned the circulation of disturbing photographs of the injured child. “We urge the public to refrain from sharing explicit and graphic content online, especially when it involves minors,” Kock stated. “Such actions can be deeply traumatic for the victim and her family.”

Community members have been encouraged to assist in the investigation. Anyone with information about the incident or the dog’s history is urged to contact Galeshewe Detectives at 082 495 5420. Anonymous tips can also be submitted via the SAPS Crime Stop line at 08600 10111 or through the MySAPS mobile app.

As the investigation continues, the case has once again brought attention to the debate surrounding pit bulls and the need for responsible pet ownership. Calls for stronger laws and better enforcement are growing louder as communities seek ways to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice is served and that measures are taken to protect children and the broader public from similar attacks.
