Two people tragically lost their lives in a collision involving a bakkie and a bus in Durban’s Central Business District (CBD) late on Sunday, September 29, 2024. The crash occurred at the corner of Stanger Street and Somtseu Road, just before midnight. Emergency responders declared both victims dead at the scene.
ALS Paramedics arrived promptly to tend to approximately 20 individuals who were injured in the crash. The severity of the incident required additional emergency services to assist in transporting the injured to hospitals in and around Durban. The injured passengers were stabilized on-site before being taken to various medical facilities for further treatment.
In a separate incident over the weekend in Durban, four people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision on Saturday night. Emergency responders had to extricate trapped passengers from the wreckage before transporting them to hospitals for medical attention. The cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed.
Tragically, similar incidents have occurred recently. On Heritage Day, two people died in a head-on collision involving a taxi and a bakkie. Seventeen other passengers in the taxi sustained injuries, with seven suffering serious wounds, one of whom was airlifted to the hospital.
These accidents have sparked renewed calls for road safety in KwaZulu-Natal, as emergency services continue to respond to such devastating incidents.
