A tragic and deeply disturbing incident unfolded in the Eastern Cape, where a 33-year-old man was shot dead by police following an alleged rape attack on a young woman. The incident has once again sparked outrage and renewed concern about gender-based violence and the dangers faced by women in South Africa.
According to preliminary reports, the suspect allegedly used social media to lure a 24-year-old woman. It is alleged that the man contacted the woman on Facebook and promised her money, convincing her to meet him in person. Unaware of the danger she was walking into, the woman agreed to the meeting, believing it to be a legitimate opportunity.

The two reportedly met in Mthatha before boarding a taxi together to Tsolo. Upon arrival, they disembarked and began walking on foot toward the man’s home in the Mbuto area. Along the way, the route took them through a wooded and secluded area. It was there, police allege, that the situation took a horrific turn.
While walking through the forest, the man allegedly pulled out a knife and threatened the woman. She was reportedly overpowered and raped at knifepoint in the bush. The attack left the woman traumatized but, despite the danger, she showed remarkable presence of mind.
After the alleged assault, while the suspect was still nearby, the woman managed to secretly send a WhatsApp message to her family. She shared her live location and alerted them to what had happened. Her quick thinking proved crucial, as her family immediately contacted the police and provided them with the location details.
Police officers responded swiftly to the distress call and rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they reportedly found both the woman and the suspect still in the area. Officers attempted to arrest the man, but the situation quickly escalated. According to police, the suspect resisted arrest and allegedly drew the same knife used during the attack.
It is alleged that the man attempted to attack the police officers, forcing them to act in self-defense. In response to the immediate threat, officers opened fire, fatally shooting the suspect. Emergency services were called, but the man was declared dead at the scene.
The woman was taken to a medical facility for treatment and further examination. She is receiving medical care and psychological support following the traumatic ordeal. Police have opened a docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the alleged rape and the fatal shooting.
The case has reignited conversations around online safety, with authorities urging the public—especially young women—to exercise caution when meeting people they have only interacted with on social media. Police also emphasized the importance of reporting crimes immediately and praised the victim’s bravery and quick action, which helped prevent further harm.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and authorities have reiterated their commitment to combating gender-based violence and ensuring the safety of communities across the province.
