Actress Asavela Mqokiyana paid a heartfelt tribute to legendary actor Don Mlangeni Nawa during his memorial service, revealing how he supported her during a deeply personal and painful time in her life.
Don Mlangeni Nawa, best known for his iconic roles in Isidingo and The Estate, passed away on April 16, 2025, at the age of 65. On Thursday, April 24, celebrities, fans, and family gathered to honor his life and legacy. Among the tributes, Mqokiyana’s message stood out for its emotional depth and sincerity.
Speaking at the service, the former Isibaya and Abomama star recalled first meeting Mlangeni at an audition in 2019. Though he wasn’t one to entertain “fans,” she said, they quickly formed a special bond. “It was in 2021 that we truly sparked a beautiful friendship,” she shared.
Mqokiyana highlighted how Mlangeni became a consistent and comforting presence in her life. “What struck me the most about Bab’ Don was his wisdom and fatherly affection. We shared a birthday month, and he would call me every year to wish me.”
She then subtly hinted at how Mlangeni supported her during one of the most challenging moments of her life — her 2024 divorce from businessman Vuyisa Mqokiyana, the father of her daughter. Although she didn’t name the event directly, she emotionally recounted reaching out to Mlangeni when she needed someone the most. At the time, Mqokiyana had sparked speculation after posting a photo in front of the KZN High Court dressed in black, leading fans to believe her marriage had ended.
Social media was filled with messages of love and support for both Mqokiyana and the late actor. One user, @VusiThanga, wrote: “Stay strong Asa. We love you. God, Bab’ Don and your ancestors are fighting very hard for you.” Another, @Patrick61593939, added: “May Bra Don Mlangeni’s soul rest in eternal peace.”
The entertainment community also showed an outpouring of grief and remembrance. House of Zwide director and actor Kagiso Modupe remembered Mlangeni fondly, noting his humor and vibrant spirit. They had worked together on the Netflix drama Losing Lerato. “He had this natural way of making you laugh, even on serious sets,” Modupe shared.
Don Mlangeni’s contributions to the South African television and film industry spanned decades. He was best known for his portrayal of Zeb Matabane on Isidingo, a role that earned him national acclaim. Colleagues described him as a pillar of the industry whose presence left a lasting impact on everyone he worked with.
As South Africa bids farewell to one of its most respected thespians, Asavela Mqokiyana’s tribute highlighted the personal impact Mlangeni had on those who knew him — not just as an actor, but as a mentor, friend, and father figure.
May Don Mlangeni Nawa’s soul rest in peace. His legacy will continue to live on through the lives he touched and the stories he helped bring to life on screen.
