The Daveyton community in Ekurhuleni has been left heartbroken and outraged following the tragic death of 21-year-old Ntokozo Masilela, who was fatally shot during a brutal armed robbery at an Engen petrol station on May 5, 2025.

Ntokozo was a passenger in an e-hailing vehicle that unknowingly drove into the middle of an ongoing robbery. As the driver attempted to reverse and escape the chaos, the armed suspects opened fire, striking Ntokozo. The young woman was rushed to the hospital by her mother, but despite medical efforts, she tragically succumbed to her injuries.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as terrifying and chaotic. The robbers showed no regard for human life, firing indiscriminately and ordering terrified customers to lie on the ground. Many residents who were present or nearby were left traumatised by the incident, as the sound of gunshots shattered the ordinary evening.

Ntokozo’s death has left a deep void in the hearts of her family, friends, and the broader community. Described as a vibrant and kind-hearted individual, Ntokozo had her whole future ahead of her. Her senseless death has ignited calls for greater security and accountability in the area, with many residents voicing their frustration over the rising crime rates and the lack of visible policing.

A candlelight vigil held in her honour on May 8 drew more than 2,000 mourners. The outpouring of support and grief reflected the profound impact Ntokozo had on those around her. She was laid to rest on May 10 in an emotional ceremony attended by family, friends, and community leaders who came together to celebrate her life and call for justice.

Her loved ones are now demanding answers and urging authorities to find the culprits responsible for the heinous act. They are calling on law enforcement agencies to prioritize the case and bring the perpetrators to justice before more innocent lives are lost.
