On Tuesday, May 13, a devastating fire ravaged the home of the Maebela family in the Dikwengweng section of Casteel village, located in Acornhoek, Mpumalanga. The fire erupted unexpectedly, leaving the family in distress and causing the total loss of their belongings.
Eyewitness Floyd Mahlake, a member of the local Haii Suka brand, was in the area running errands when he was approached by a distressed young girl. The girl, visibly shaken, informed Mahlake that her family’s home was on fire. Without hesitation, he followed her back to the scene, where chaos had already unfolded. Screams could be heard from within the flames, alerting Mahlake to the fact that someone was still trapped inside.
Demonstrating courage and quick thinking, Mahlake entered the burning home and was able to rescue the girl’s father, who had been caught in the fire. Thankfully, no lives were lost in the incident. However, the fire consumed the entire house, leaving the family with nothing.
Mahlake expressed his shock and disappointment at the lack of assistance from nearby neighbors during the emergency. “While we were trying to save lives and control the fire, many of the neighbors continued with their daily routines, showing no interest in helping,” he said. Despite the immediate community’s inaction, Mahlake praised those who came from nearby areas and helped to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the house.
Among the losses was the school uniform of 14-year-old Ben Matloshe, a student who now faces challenges continuing his education without basic supplies. Deeply moved by the situation, Mahlake has taken the initiative to appeal to the public for help. He is urging kind-hearted individuals and organizations to step in and support the family, especially by donating school uniforms and other essentials.
“This family lost everything in a matter of minutes. Although we are grateful no one died, they are left with nothing. Helping them, even in a small way, can make a big difference,” Mahlake added.
For those who are willing to contribute or offer support, more details can be found through the Haii Suka platform. Community members are encouraged to come together and assist the Maebela family in rebuilding their lives after this tragic event.
