Police in Mpumalanga have launched an investigation following a dramatic failed cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery that ended in a fatal shootout between armed robbers and private security guards. The incident occurred on Thursday near White River, where a group of armed assailants ambushed a cash van in an attempt to steal money.

According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the suspects opened fire on the security personnel escorting the van. However, the guards returned fire, shooting two of the attackers during the confrontation. “Tragically, one of the alleged suspects succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while another was wounded and is receiving medical treatment under police guard,” Mdhluli confirmed.

Despite the attackers’ efforts, no money was taken during the attempted robbery. The crime scene revealed two assault rifles believed to have been used by the suspects, while the vehicle they used—a Ford Ranger bakkie—was later discovered abandoned in Swalala near Masoyi.

Mdhluli noted that the exact number of suspects involved remains unknown, as several fled the scene amid the gunfire exchange. Police are urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist in locating the remaining suspects. Tip-offs can be made anonymously through Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or via the My SAPS App.

The acting provincial police commissioner of Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the swift and professional response by the private security officers involved. “The quick thinking and bravery of the security team helped prevent further chaos and potential loss of life,” he said. “We remain committed to ensuring the safety of our communities and will continue working closely with our partners to root out criminal elements.”

The surviving suspect is expected to face criminal charges soon and appear in court, pending further investigations.

This incident is part of a troubling trend of violent CIT heists in South Africa. Just last week, a failed heist in Thokoza, Gauteng, led to a suspect losing his leg after attempting to detonate explosives near a cash van. In that case, at least 10 suspects were reportedly involved, and one allegedly tried to bomb the vehicle after ramming it with a BMW. The explosion resulted in severe injuries.

Police continue to emphasize the importance of public cooperation in combating CIT-related crimes. Authorities assure the public that all information received will be treated as confidential and that informants can remain anonymous.

As the investigation into the White River incident continues, law enforcement agencies reiterate their stance on zero tolerance toward armed robberies and have pledged to increase coordinated operations to deter such crimes across the province.
