Gogo Elizabeth Setshedi, the oldest known citizen in the Moretele Local Municipality of North West, has passed away at the remarkable age of 121. Her death marks the end of a historic era, and preparations are underway to honor her long and impactful life.
According to Moretele Local Municipality spokesperson Mothupi Malebye, Gogo Setshedi passed away peacefully in her sleep on 8 May 2025 at the Jubilee Hospital in Hammanskraal, Tshwane. Her funeral is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 17 May 2025, at her home village of Slagboom in North West.
Malebye described the late Gogo Setshedi as a celebrated figure in the province. “The arrangements to bury North West’s oldest resident are progressing smoothly. Prominent figures across the province are expected to gather in Slagboom to pay their final respects,” he said.
Born on 16 July 1903 in the village of De Bosveld, Elizabeth Benya Setshedi lived through monumental historical periods. From her early years in De Bosveld, she moved to Polompo, later to Tawane, and eventually settled in Slagboom Village, where she lived for the rest of her life. She was set to turn 122 years old in July this year.
Her long life was filled with experiences and memories that spanned over a century. Her family described her as the matriarch and pillar of strength. Her daughter, Martha Zitha (84), expressed the family’s sorrow and deep sense of loss. “She was the heart of our family, our strength,” said Martha.
Despite her advanced age, Gogo Elizabeth was known for her lively personality and simple joys. One of her favorite meals was “ispatlo,” a local sandwich made with chips, polony, egg, and Russian sausage.
She leaves behind a large and loving family. She was the mother of 12 children, and her lineage extends to 58 grandchildren, 103 great-grandchildren, and 43 great-great-grandchildren. At the time of her passing, she was survived by four of her children and many of her descendants.
The funeral service for Gogo Setshedi will begin at 7:00 a.m. at the Slagboom Cemetery. The municipality has confirmed that officials will attend the service to honor her life and legacy.
Gogo Elizabeth Setshedi’s remarkable life is a symbol of endurance, resilience, and love. Her passing is not only a loss to her family but also to the wider community of Moretele and the province of North West. As the community gathers to say their goodbyes, her story will continue to inspire generations to come.
