The Tsakani community is reeling in grief following the shocking discovery of 48-year-old Nobabili Nyawuza’s lifeless body in a trench on July 6. A mother of six, Nobabili’s tragic death occurred just hours after attending her aunt’s funeral, leaving her family and the broader community devastated.

Her brother, Madoda Nyawuza, recounted the day’s events. After the funeral, the family and friends gathered for an after-tears celebration. Madoda later left the gathering, assuming his sister would return home safely. However, according to witnesses, Nobabili went to a nearby tavern, not far from their late aunt’s home.

At the tavern, it’s alleged that a man approached Nobabili, bought her drinks, and sat with her for some time. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the pair leave together around 10:00 p.m., walking toward an open field. Shortly after, Nobabili’s screams echoed through the night, but fear prevented bystanders from intervening.

Witnesses later saw the man dragging what appeared to be her lifeless body into a trench. Around 2:00 a.m., Madoda received the heartbreaking call from a relative notifying him of his sister’s death.

“When I got to the scene, police and paramedics were already there,” he said. “Her face was covered in blood, and her head was resting on a rock. She had sustained head injuries, was partially undressed, and her private area seemed mutilated. It was horrifying.”

Madoda remembered Nobabili as a kind-hearted, cheerful, and sociable woman. “Her children are shattered. Seeing photos of her online with touching tributes just makes the pain worse. She brought so much joy into our lives.”

Her eldest daughter, 25-year-old Sibongile Nyawuza, spoke through tears at a candlelight vigil held at their home on July 9. “My mom was my best friend. We called each other ‘girl,’ and I could talk to her about anything. Now, I must care for my siblings alone. She won’t see me graduate. This pain is unbearable.”

The vigil drew dozens of community members who gathered to honour Nobabili’s memory through songs, scripture readings, and prayer. Residents lit candles, shared their memories, and vowed to stand by the Nyawuza family during this painful time.

Captain Neldah Sekgobela from the Ekurhuleni SAPS confirmed the murder. “On July 6, at approximately 00:35, Tsakani police responded to a call near Maruate Street, Extension 8. The deceased was found half-naked in a trench with multiple stab wounds. Her shoes, beanie, wig, and house keys were scattered nearby.”

Sergeant Lebohang Ramaesa confirmed that a suspect turned himself in to police later that day.

Nobabili’s brutal killing has shaken the Tsakani community, bringing attention once again to the rising cases of gender-based violence in South Africa. Her family, friends, and neighbours now call for justice as they mourn the loss of a beloved mother, sister, and friend.
