A shocking act of violence has rocked the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, involving a police officer who allegedly took the law into his own hands. Constable SW Xolo, who is attached to the Public Order Policing (POP) unit in Port Shepstone, is at the center of a tragic incident that left two people dead and two others injured.
According to initial reports, Constable Xolo was off duty when he decided to pay an unannounced visit to his girlfriend’s home in Margate. What he found there reportedly pushed him over the edge. Upon entering her home, he allegedly discovered his girlfriend in bed with another man.
In a moment of rage, it is alleged that the officer drew his service firearm and opened fire on the couple. His girlfriend was fatally shot, dying at the scene. The man she was with was seriously injured but survived and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The situation escalated further after the shooting. Instead of handing himself over to authorities, Constable Xolo reportedly got into his car and drove back toward Port Shepstone. But his journey ended in even more tragedy. His vehicle collided with a truck on the way, leading to a crash that resulted in the death of a pedestrian and left the truck driver with minor injuries. Xolo himself was critically injured in the crash and was taken to hospital under police guard.
The incident has sent shockwaves through both the police force and the local community, raising serious questions about emotional control, mental health support for officers, and the tragic consequences of impulsive acts rooted in jealousy and betrayal.
Community members expressed a mix of anger, shock, and heartbreak. “As police officers, they are supposed to protect us — not turn into killers,” said one Margate resident. Others have also highlighted the pressures and emotional toll that law enforcement officers face, often without proper mental health intervention.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has confirmed it is investigating the matter. A case of murder, attempted murder, and culpable homicide has been opened, and the full circumstances leading up to the incident will be thoroughly examined.
This incident has also reignited public debate: Was Constable Xolo’s reaction justified by heartbreak and betrayal, or was it a cold-blooded misuse of power and violence? While some sympathize with the emotional pain he may have felt, many agree that nothing excuses taking another person’s life, especially from someone sworn to uphold the law.
As Constable Xolo fights for his life in hospital, he will likely face serious legal consequences should he recover. In the meantime, families on both sides are left to pick up the pieces after an eruption of violence that could have been avoided.
