A tragic accident on the R81 road at Ga-Sekgopo, outside Polokwane in Limpopo, has claimed the lives of four women and left dozens of others injured. The fatal crash occurred on the night of Saturday, 10 August 2025, when a passenger bus carrying members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) overturned while en route to Moria.
Accident Details
According to the Limpopo Department of Transport, the bus was transporting congregants from the Giyani area to attend church in Moria when disaster struck. Department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene confirmed that the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.
“Reports indicate that the driver lost control of the bus, which subsequently overturned, sadly claiming the lives of four women,” Chuene said. “The passengers sustained moderate to serious injuries, while 45 others, including the driver, sustained minor injuries.”
The injured passengers were rushed to multiple healthcare facilities for urgent medical attention. Those with more serious injuries were taken to Kgapane Hospital, Mankweng Hospital, and Van Velden Hospital in Limpopo. The bus driver, who also sustained minor injuries, was among the patients transported for treatment.
Casualties and Injuries
In total, 49 people were hurt in the accident, ranging from minor to serious injuries. The deceased victims were all female passengers whose identities have not yet been made public, as authorities work to notify their families. Emergency medical teams were dispatched to the scene shortly after the crash, working alongside police and rescue personnel to free trapped passengers and provide immediate aid.
Possible Cause of the Crash
While the exact cause is still under investigation, preliminary reports suggest that the driver may have lost control due to unknown factors. Road and weather conditions at the time have not been officially confirmed, and authorities are appealing for witnesses to assist with information. Accident reconstruction experts will be examining the scene and vehicle to determine what led to the tragedy.
Community Shock and Church Response
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Mopani District community and among members of the ZCC, one of the largest religious groups in South Africa. The pilgrimage to Moria is a significant event for congregants, particularly around Women’s Day weekend, making the loss even more heartbreaking.
Local leaders and church officials have expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased, offering prayers and support. “Our hearts go out to all those affected by this devastating accident,” one church representative said, adding that they are working to provide counselling for survivors and families.
Authorities Urge Road Safety
In the wake of the accident, the Limpopo Department of Transport has once again stressed the importance of road safety, especially during peak travel periods for religious gatherings and public holidays. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, avoid fatigue, and ensure vehicles are roadworthy before long-distance travel.
The investigation into the R81 bus crash continues, with officials promising to release further updates as more details emerge.
