South Africans were deeply moved this past week after singer Lira and actor Thembinkosi Mthembu went out of their way to visit a young fan in hospital. The two stars not only lifted the spirit of 19-year-old Noxolo “Noxy” Clara, who is battling kidney failure, but also made her long-awaited matric farewell one to remember.
A Matric Farewell in Hospital
Noxy, a patient at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, had looked forward to celebrating her matric farewell with her peers. Unfortunately, her health challenges made it impossible for her to attend the event. Determined not to let her miss out, her family, along with hospital nurses and doctors, organised a surprise celebration inside the hospital ward on 17 August 2025.
The highlight of the evening was when Thembinkosi Mthembu, best known for his role in Shaka iLembe, walked into the room. Dressed in a sharp black suit and carrying a bouquet of flowers, he made a grand entrance as Noxy’s official “matric farewell date.” Noxy, beautifully dressed and styled for the occasion, beamed with joy as she sat beside the actor. He danced, joked, and ensured she felt the magic of the special day.
A Surprise Performance from Lira
As if the evening could not get any more magical, multi-award-winning songstress Lira made her own surprise appearance. She performed for Noxy at her bedside, filling the ward with music, laughter, and warmth. Videos of Lira singing and spending time with Noxy quickly made their way onto social media, capturing hearts across the country.
Specialist paediatrician Dr Nokukhanya Khanyile-Lenake, who helped organise the occasion, described the event as unforgettable. “As difficult as last week was for me personally, I’m so grateful that I was able to be a part of the planning for such a beautiful soul. Forever more, 17 August will be known as Noxy Day,” she shared emotionally.
South Africa Reacts with Love
The story of Noxy’s hospital matric farewell went viral, with thousands of South Africans sending prayers, messages of love, and encouragement. Social media was flooded with heartfelt comments, from blessings of healing to admiration for the kindness shown by the two celebrities.
One user prayed, “Heavenly Father, please heal this precious girl in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.” Another added, “May the Lord Almighty cover her with the shadow of his wings. Get well soon, my angel.”
Many others praised the stars for taking time out of their busy schedules to brighten the life of a young fan facing difficult circumstances. Their simple yet powerful gestures served as a reminder of the positive impact celebrities can have when they use their platforms for compassion.
A Day to Remember
For Noxy, her unexpected matric farewell turned into a once-in-a-lifetime experience—one filled with laughter, music, and the joy of meeting her favourite stars. For South Africans, it was a touching story of humanity, reminding the nation of the healing power of kindness.
As the videos continue to circulate, Noxy’s journey has inspired prayers and hope, with many calling 17 August not just her matric farewell, but a day of celebration, resilience, and love.
