A heartbreaking tragedy has struck the community of Ntapuka in Ndwedwe, KwaZulu-Natal, after the lifeless body of a five-year-old girl was discovered in a cattle dip pit on Friday afternoon.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the Operations Centre received a distress call around 15:07, when a concerned resident reported that the child had been missing for several hours. The little girl was last seen at midday, playing near the communal cattle dip pit with two of her young friends.
Community’s Search Efforts
When the child did not return home, panic quickly spread among family members and neighbours. Community members immediately launched a search, combing the area in hopes of finding her alive. Some residents even attempted to drain half of the chemical mixture from the pit, fearing the worst. Despite their desperate efforts, they could not locate the child.
It was at this point that residents turned to RUSA for assistance. A team of Reaction Officers and paramedics were immediately dispatched to Ntapuka. Due to the rough and uneven terrain, emergency personnel had to abandon their vehicles nearly one kilometre from the site and proceed on foot.
The Discovery
Upon arrival, RUSA officers carefully entered the pit and made the devastating discovery: the little girl’s body was submerged in the toxic water. She was retrieved and declared deceased at the scene. Her family, already shaken by hours of uncertainty, were left grief-stricken as the heartbreaking confirmation set in.
How the Tragedy Unfolded
According to initial reports, the pit had been constructed by the community for dipping cattle to control parasites. It contained a mixture of chemicals and pesticides commonly used for livestock maintenance. Local residents regularly rely on it as part of their farming practices.
On the day of the incident, the young girl and her friends had wandered to the pit. It is alleged that the three children ventured down the stairs leading into the water.
