The community of Naboomspruit in Limpopo came together on Saturday, 23 August 2025, to bid a final farewell to the late Sergeant Nyiko William Lelaka (43), who tragically lost his life in a devastating road accident while on duty. The funeral service was held at the packed Community Hall, where family members, colleagues, community leaders, and friends gathered to honour a man remembered as both a dedicated officer and a compassionate human being.
Sergeant Lelaka was attached to Naboomspruit Police Station, where he served faithfully as a court orderly. On Thursday, 14 August 2025, he was transporting inmates to the Mookgophong Magistrate’s Court when tragedy struck. The police vehicle carrying him and 11 inmates overturned along the Naboomspruit Road, leaving him and four inmates dead. Several others were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.
A Life of Service and Integrity
The solemn service was officiated by Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, joined by Waterberg District Commissioner Major General Masingi. Both leaders praised Sergeant Lelaka’s unwavering commitment to duty and his selfless service to the people of Limpopo.

Described as joyful, kindhearted, and full of compassion, Sergeant Lelaka touched the lives of many in both his professional and personal circles. His colleagues recalled his warm personality, his ability to treat everyone with respect, and his courage in serving the community.
The Tragic Accident
Police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba confirmed the details of the accident, explaining that Sergeant Lelaka had collected 11 inmates from Mokopane Police Station for a scheduled court appearance in Mookgophong. Unfortunately, the journey turned fatal when the vehicle overturned.
“We can confirm as the SAPS in Limpopo that there was a horrific accident along Naboomspruit Road where a SAPS member attached to Naboomspruit Police Station lost his life, as well as four other inmates,” Mashaba said. He further conveyed condolences on behalf of the South African Police Service, stating that the injured inmates were transported to hospital to receive medical attention.
