Midrand, September 3, 2025 — A tragic accident on the N1 North freeway in Midrand has left five people dead and caused massive traffic disruptions, sending shockwaves across Johannesburg’s road networks.
The accident occurred on Wednesday morning between the Buccleuch Interchange and Allandale Road, one of the busiest stretches of the freeway. According to Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, the crash involved a single minibus taxi that overturned while transporting passengers.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle lost control and overturned. Unfortunately, five people have been confirmed dead at the scene, with several others sustaining serious injuries,” said Fihla.
Emergency Response and Road Closures
Emergency medical services, including paramedics, fire units, and law enforcement, rushed to the scene immediately after the crash was reported. Rescue teams worked tirelessly to treat the injured and secure the accident site. Injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention, though authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of people hurt.
JMPD confirmed that the far-right lane of the freeway was directly affected, but due to the severity of the incident, the entire northbound section was temporarily closed. This allowed investigators to process the accident scene and enabled recovery vehicles to remove the wreckage.
“The freeway will remain closed until further notice. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid this stretch and make use of alternative routes to ease congestion,” Fihla explained.

The N1 is one of Gauteng’s most vital traffic arteries, linking Johannesburg to Pretoria. Following the crash, traffic in both directions quickly became gridlocked, with long queues stretching for several kilometers. Motorists reported being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for hours, while side roads and alternative routes into Midrand also became heavily congested.
Commuters expressed frustration on social media, posting photos and videos of the traffic standstill. Many also shared condolences to the families of the victims.

Superintendent Fihla urged drivers to remain calm, patient, and vigilant while navigating detours and congested routes. He also stressed the importance of road safety, particularly as the minibus taxi industry remains one of the most widely used yet accident-prone modes of transport in South Africa.
“The JMPD strongly advises all road users to exercise caution, obey traffic rules, and drive responsibly. Incidents like these are a reminder of the dangers on our roads,” he said.
