Controversial businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela, who has been at the center of the Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal, is once again making headlines—this time for allegedly using stolen public health funds to buy a R52 million luxury hypercar.
According to a News24 report, Maumela allegedly used money siphoned from Tembisa Hospital tenders to purchase a Pagani Huayra Roadster, an Italian-made hypercar valued at over R52 million. The Pagani Huayra is one of the rarest and most expensive vehicles in the world, renowned for its handcrafted design and top-tier performance. Financial records obtained by investigators reportedly show a direct money trail linking public health contracts to the extravagant purchase.

Maumela is among several individuals currently being investigated by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in connection with the looting of more than R2 billion from the Gauteng Department of Health’s procurement budget. The funds were allegedly funneled through inflated tenders and shell companies tied to the Tembisa Hospital network.
In previous raids, authorities seized several high-end assets from Maumela’s Sandton mansion, including luxury vehicles, designer clothing, and valuable works of art. These seizures form part of the state’s broader attempt to trace and recover assets believed to have been acquired through corruption.
The Tembisa Hospital scandal gained national attention following the shocking assassination of whistleblower Babita Deokaran in 2021. Deokaran, a senior Gauteng health official, had flagged hundreds of suspicious payments made by the hospital just weeks before her death. Her murder remains a grim symbol of the high stakes and deep-rooted corruption within the provincial health system.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for swift action from prosecutors, saying the latest revelations confirm the extent of corruption that continues to cripple South Africa’s public healthcare sector. “This is proof of the obscene levels of corruption that rob ordinary patients of life-saving services while enriching politically connected individuals,” the party said in a statement.
The DA also called for stronger oversight mechanisms within provincial health departments and urged the government to fast-track asset forfeiture proceedings against individuals implicated in the scandal.
Meanwhile, the SIU and NPA have intensified their probe into Maumela’s financial dealings. Investigators are reportedly focusing on tracing additional luxury assets and offshore accounts possibly linked to the misappropriated hospital funds. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the full scale of the corruption network that has drained billions from the public purse.
As the probe continues, South Africans await accountability and justice for the widespread corruption that has undermined trust in public institutions and compromised healthcare services for thousands of patients across Gauteng.
