According to acting provincial police commissioner Major General Fred Kekana, two vehicles – an Audi and a Mahindra bakkie – were travelling together along 8th Street when they came under attack by assailants driving a white BMW X5/X6. The Audi driver and one of the Mahindra’s passengers died at the scene. Three of the Mahindra’s occupants were shot and taken to hospital, while two civilians also sustained injuries when their vehicle crashed after losing control during the incident.

The suspects’ getaway vehicle was later found abandoned a few kilometres from the scene, with blood still inside — suggesting that one of the attackers may have been wounded.
Police believe the motive is linked to ongoing taxi‑industry violence, especially given the high profile of one of the deceased victims. Since January, Gauteng has recorded 39 taxi‑related violent incidents. So far, 65 suspects have been arrested in connection with murder, attempted murder and illegal firearm possession.

Kekana urged taxi associations and operators to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than violence, emphasising the detrimental impact of assassinations on families and the industry as a whole: “Killing each other is not the solution – families are left without breadwinners, and the very industry you depend on suffers.”
He also requested that hospitals, clinics and private doctors report any patient arriving with a bullet wound, as they may be one of the suspects.

The KwaZulu‑Natal police chief noted the force has had a “hectic week” dealing with multiple violent incidents, including a mass shooting in Westbury and a truck hijacking at Sunderland Ridge, underscoring the broader challenge of violent crime in the region.
As the manhunt continues, members of the public have been encouraged to share any information anonymously via the provided tips line. Police emphasise the importance of community cooperation in bringing perpetrators to justice.
