Takunda Muchweni, a learner from Jan Kriel School in Kuils River, Western Cape, has been proudly recognised as one of South Africa’s top achievers in the Matric Class of 2025. Her remarkable academic success places her among the country’s brightest young minds and serves as an inspiring reminder that determination and resilience can triumph over even the most difficult circumstances.
Ahead of the official release of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results, several top-performing learners from the Class of 2025 shared their journeys of perseverance and sacrifice. These stories came to the fore during the annual breakfast event hosted by the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, in Fairlands, Johannesburg. At the event, the minister honoured 42 top achievers from across the country, celebrating not only their academic excellence but also the personal challenges they overcame to reach this milestone.

Among these exceptional learners was Takunda, whose story stood out as a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit. Despite living with a disability that affects her health and daily functioning, she excelled academically and earned national recognition. Her journey was marked by numerous obstacles, including a recent hospital stay just before her final examinations, yet she remained focused on her goals.
Takunda’s mother, Tamari Muchweni, spoke emotionally about the challenges her daughter faced and the resilience that carried her through. She described the moment as one of immense pride and gratitude for the family. According to Tamari, Takunda’s success once seemed like a distant dream due to her health condition, but perseverance and unwavering support made it possible.

During Takunda’s hospitalisation ahead of her exams, studying never stopped. Her mother recalled nights when Takunda struggled to sleep because of pain, yet she continued to revise her work. Books were brought to the hospital, and she remained in constant communication with her teachers to ensure she stayed on track with her studies. This dedication highlighted her determination to succeed despite physical discomfort and emotional strain.
Takunda herself acknowledged that the journey was far from easy. She described her matric year as challenging but rewarding, crediting her parents’ support as a crucial factor in her success. Their encouragement and sacrifices helped her push forward during moments of doubt and exhaustion.
Looking to the future, Takunda plans to study Industrial Psychology, a field that will allow her to better understand human behaviour and contribute meaningfully to society. Her ambition reflects her desire to turn her own experiences into a source of strength and purpose.
Takunda Muchweni’s achievement is more than a personal victory; it is a symbol of hope for learners facing adversity across South Africa. Her story sends a powerful message that circumstances do not define one’s potential. With dedication, support, and resilience, even the toughest challenges can be overcome, and dreams can indeed become reality.
