Two outstanding matriculants from St John’s College in Johannesburg are preparing to take their academic journeys to one of the world’s most prestigious universities after securing admission to Harvard University in the United States. Siza Gule and Menzi Bongwe, both top achievers in the 2025 National Senior Certificate examinations, earned an impressive nine distinctions each, marking the end of a demanding but rewarding matric year.

For both learners, the release of their matric results was an emotional moment filled with relief and gratitude. Gule described the experience as a weight being lifted after months of anticipation and hard work. Balancing academics with leadership responsibilities, he served as head boy during his matric year, a role that required discipline, careful planning and resilience. He admitted that the pressure was intense at times, but the experience helped him grow both academically and personally.
Gule’s nine distinctions included English, mathematics, physical sciences, French, AP English, AP mathematics and life orientation. His strong academic performance, combined with his leadership and extracurricular involvement, earned him an offer to study at Harvard from August. At the Ivy League institution, he plans to explore law, politics and theatre through Harvard’s liberal arts programme. Gule said the university’s multidisciplinary approach excites him, as it allows him to combine his passion for drama and literature with his interest in law and politics.
Bongwe’s matric journey was equally demanding. He also achieved nine distinctions, including English, core mathematics, physical sciences, history, drama, AP English and AP mathematics. He described the year as nerve-racking but ultimately fulfilling. For Bongwe, success came down to strict time management and knowing when to rest. He made a conscious effort to maintain balance, ensuring he spent time with friends and avoided burnout.
Family, teachers and peers played a crucial role in Bongwe’s success. He expressed deep gratitude to those who supported him throughout the year, saying he could not have achieved his results alone. His acceptance into Harvard College came as a complete shock, given the competitive nature of the application process. Bongwe described the moment as surreal, saying he still feels as though someone might “pinch” him to make sure it is real.
At Harvard, Bongwe plans to study economics, driven by a desire to understand global systems and contribute meaningfully on an international stage. He described the application process as gruelling, involving entrance exams, extensive essays and careful coordination with school commitments. Despite the challenges, he said persevering through the process was worth it.
Both students shared words of encouragement for future matriculants. Gule emphasised that success requires hard work and a willingness to be uncomfortable, while Bongwe encouraged learners to believe in their dreams and remain disciplined.
As they prepare for the next chapter of their lives, Gule and Bongwe plan to rest, reflect and give back to their communities through tutoring. Their journey from South African classrooms to Harvard University stands as a powerful reminder that dedication, support and perseverance can open doors to global opportunities.
