The announcement that 18-year-old Rikus Kylander had achieved five distinctions in his matric examinations was met with both pride and deep sorrow. While his academic success reflected years of dedication and hard work, the tragic reality is that Rikus is not present to celebrate this remarkable milestone. The Krugersdorp teenager disappeared in December while snorkelling off the coast of Mozambique, turning what was meant to be a joyful post-matric holiday into a heartbreaking ordeal for his family, friends and school community.

Rikus, a matric pupil at Noordheuwel High School in Gauteng in 2025, travelled to Ponta do Ouro Beach on December 16 with a group of friends to celebrate completing his final school exams. Just over a week before Christmas, he went snorkelling with around 12 friends. At some point during the activity, Rikus failed to return to shore, prompting immediate concern from those with him.
Authorities and lifeguards were alerted as soon as his friends realised he was missing. According to Renegades Search & Rescue spokesperson Dawn Gounden, search operations began on the very same day. Rescue teams worked tirelessly along the coastline, supported by volunteers and local authorities. The search extended across sea, land and air, with Rikus’s family travelling to Mozambique the following morning to join the desperate efforts to find him.
For 22 agonising days, hope remained that Rikus might still be found. His disappearance drew widespread attention and an outpouring of support, prayers and messages of encouragement from across South Africa and beyond. Despite the extensive efforts, the official search was called off on Friday last week, leaving his loved ones facing an unthinkable reality.
Just days later, Noordheuwel High School released the matric results, confirming that Rikus had earned five distinctions. In a moving tribute, the school praised his achievement and expressed heartfelt condolences to his family. “Our dear Rikus achieved five distinctions. What a wonderful achievement,” the school said. “We hold his parents and little sister up in prayer during this difficult time. Our hearts are with you in your sorrow. Words fail us.”
The school also shared a touching message alongside a photo of Rikus in his school uniform, honouring the many roles he played in the lives of those around him — as a son, brother, friend and proud “Norie,” the affectionate name for Noordheuwel pupils. The school announced that it would be celebrating his life, with further details to be shared in due course.
Rikus’s older sister, Clarise, previously spoke about the family’s unwavering hope and determination to find him. However, in a statement released on Friday, she confirmed that the search had officially ended. “Everything that could be done has been done,” she said, expressing profound gratitude to everyone who supported the family during the painful weeks of searching.
Rikus Kylander’s story is one of immense promise, achievement and devastating loss. His five distinctions stand as a powerful testament to his dedication and potential, ensuring that his memory will live on — not only in the hearts of his loved ones, but also in the legacy of excellence he leaves behind.
