A quiet village in the Eastern Cape has been left reeling after the body of a missing teenager was found, leading to the arrest of her aunt on a charge of murder.
Eighteen-year-old Inga Mphathi from Mlengana Village was reported missing on 7 September after she failed to return home. Her sudden disappearance sparked concern among family members and neighbours, who immediately alerted police and began searching for her.

Tragically, on 25 September, police discovered her badly decomposed body in a remote area near the village. The discovery confirmed the worst fears of her loved ones and sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community.
Following investigations, police arrested Inga’s 35-year-old aunt in connection with the murder. Authorities believe she may have played a key role in the teenager’s death. According to police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo, evidence gathered during the investigation led to the woman’s arrest.
Police have also identified a second suspect, believed to be the aunt’s boyfriend, who is allegedly linked to the crime. He is currently on the run and is thought to be hiding in Cape Town. A warrant of arrest has been issued, and police are actively searching for him.
Investigators allege that Inga was assaulted before being killed and that her body was thrown over a hill in an attempt to conceal the crime. Details surrounding the case have deeply disturbed residents, who have described the incident as brutal and heartbreaking.
Community leader Petros Majola from the Khula Community Project said the village is struggling to come to terms with the tragedy. He expressed outrage over the violence and called for swift justice. According to Majola, the young woman was allegedly tied up and stabbed before her body was discarded down an embankment.
Residents have since rallied around the grieving family, offering support and demanding that all those responsible be brought to justice. Many community members have voiced concerns about safety and increasing incidents of violence in rural areas.
The accused is expected to appear in the Ngqeleni Magistrates Court, where she will formally face a charge of murder. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials have urged anyone with information about the whereabouts of the second suspect to come forward.
The tragic case has highlighted broader concerns about gender-based violence and crimes involving family members. It has also reignited conversations about the need for stronger community safety measures and quicker responses in missing persons cases.
As the investigation continues, the community remains united in its call for accountability. For Inga’s family, the focus now shifts to seeking justice for a young life cut short under devastating circumstances.
Police have assured the public that they are committed to tracking down the outstanding suspect and ensuring that the matter is fully investigated.
The loss has left an indelible mark on Mlengana Village, with many residents hoping that justice will bring some measure of closure to the grieving family.
