Residents of Pimville Zone 6 in Soweto acted swiftly after an attempted hijacking involving an Uber driver turned into a dramatic incident that ended with three suspects being captured by community members.
According to reports from the scene, the driver had received a ride request through the ride-hailing app and proceeded to collect the passengers at what was described as an isolated pickup point within the area. At first, everything appeared normal as the passengers entered the vehicle and the trip began like any other routine ride.

However, only a few minutes into the journey, the situation reportedly took a frightening turn. The suspects allegedly produced what appeared to be a firearm and began threatening the driver. At the time, the driver believed the weapon was real and feared for his life. The weapon was later discovered to be a toy gun, but during the incident the driver had no way of knowing this.
Feeling panicked and desperate to escape the dangerous situation, the driver swerved the vehicle in an attempt to break free from the suspects. During the chaotic moment, he lost control of the car before eventually bringing it to a stop.
As soon as the vehicle stopped, the driver reportedly jumped out and ran toward nearby homes while shouting for help. His cries quickly caught the attention of residents in the area, who rushed to see what was happening.

Community members immediately sprang into action after learning that the driver had allegedly been targeted in an attempted hijacking. Several residents pursued the suspects and managed to apprehend all three individuals before they could escape from the scene.
Witnesses say the suspects — two men and a woman — were held by residents while authorities were contacted. The quick response from the community ensured that the suspects did not get far after the incident unfolded.
Local residents expressed concern about crime in the area but also praised the unity shown by the community in assisting the driver during the frightening ordeal. Many said the driver was fortunate that people nearby responded so quickly to his calls for help.
Authorities were expected to take the suspects into custody following the community’s intervention. Investigations into the attempted hijacking are likely to continue as police gather statements and assess the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The event has once again highlighted the dangers faced by ride-hailing drivers who often work alone and must respond to pickup requests in unfamiliar or isolated locations.
Fortunately, in this case, the driver managed to escape without serious injury, thanks largely to the swift reaction of the Pimville community who stepped in to stop the suspects before the situation could escalate further.
