A tragic road accident on the N3 near Cato Ridge has left one person dead and two others seriously injured after a taxi and a bakkie collided head-on late on Saturday night. Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the devastating crash shortly before 11pm.
According to reports, the accident happened on the N3 highway heading towards Pietermaritzburg, close to the BP Oasis. It is believed that the taxi was travelling in the wrong lane at the time of the crash, which resulted in a direct collision with an oncoming bakkie.
When paramedics and emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they were met with a chaotic and distressing situation. Both vehicles had suffered severe damage due to the force of the impact, and debris was scattered across the road.
Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson explained that the taxi had allegedly been travelling towards Durban but was in the lane meant for vehicles heading to Pietermaritzburg when the collision occurred.
“The taxi was travelling on the wrong side of the highway when it collided head-on with a bakkie,” Jamieson said. “When paramedics arrived, they found extensive damage to both vehicles and several injured occupants.”
Unfortunately, the taxi driver, who is believed to have been in his thirties, suffered severe injuries in the crash. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was declared dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been officially released.
The two occupants of the bakkie were left trapped inside their vehicle following the impact. They sustained serious injuries and required urgent medical attention.
Firefighters from the eThekwini Fire Department worked alongside paramedics to rescue the injured individuals. Using specialised rescue equipment, they carefully cut through the wreckage of the bakkie to free the trapped occupants.
Once the victims were safely removed from the vehicle, paramedics provided immediate medical treatment at the scene. They were stabilised before being transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care. Their current conditions have not yet been publicly confirmed.
Authorities quickly arrived at the scene to manage traffic and begin investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. Officers from Metro Police as well as the South African Police Service were present to secure the area and gather information that could help determine what led to the tragic collision.
The crash caused temporary disruptions along the busy N3 highway while emergency teams worked to clear the wreckage and ensure the safety of other road users.
Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the dangers that can occur on major highways, especially when drivers travel on the wrong side of the road. Investigators are expected to examine evidence from the scene as well as statements from witnesses to establish exactly how the accident happened.
The death of the taxi driver adds to the growing concern over road safety in South Africa, particularly on major routes such as the N3, which sees heavy traffic daily.
Police investigations into the crash are ongoing.
