A routine roadside stop turned fatal when an 86-year-old man lost his life after being struck by a speeding vehicle while changing a tyre next to a busy highway. The tragic incident, reported on 30 March 2026, has once again highlighted the dangers motorists face when pulled over along high-speed roads.
According to emergency responders, the elderly man had stopped on the side of the highway to attend to a flat tyre when the accident occurred. While he was focused on the task, a passing vehicle traveling at high speed veered into him, causing catastrophic injuries.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the distress call. A paramedic from a private emergency service provider was first to arrive on the scene, quickly assessing the situation and initiating life-saving interventions. Within minutes, additional medical personnel, including a doctor and intermediate life support practitioners, joined the effort, forming a coordinated response team.

Upon assessment, it was clear that the man had sustained severe, life-threatening injuries. Responders worked urgently to control heavy bleeding using advanced medical supplies, including haemostatic agents and large trauma dressings. Their primary focus was to stabilise the patient and prevent further deterioration while awaiting additional support.
Teams from multiple emergency services soon arrived, significantly increasing the level of care available on site. Among them were advanced life support paramedics who initiated more intensive treatment protocols. The patient was given oxygen to assist his breathing, along with strong pain relief medication to ease his suffering. Intravenous access was established to administer fluids and medication, including clot-promoting treatment aimed at controlling internal bleeding.
Despite these extensive efforts, the man’s condition worsened. He went into critical decline, prompting the medical team to perform advanced airway management, including intubation, in an attempt to secure his breathing. Shortly thereafter, he suffered cardiac arrest.
A full advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) resuscitation was initiated at the scene. Paramedics worked tirelessly, performing chest compressions and administering emergency medication in a determined effort to revive him. Unfortunately, despite their professionalism and persistence, the severity of his injuries proved too great.
After exhaustive attempts to save his life, the man was declared deceased at the scene.
The incident drew a large presence of emergency responders, including private ambulance services, provincial emergency medical teams, traffic authorities, and police. Their coordinated efforts ensured that every possible measure was taken in an attempt to save the man’s life, while also managing the scene and ensuring safety for other road users.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, emergency response teams expressed their condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. They also acknowledged the dedication and teamwork displayed by all personnel involved, including both professional responders and volunteers.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with stopping on the side of highways. Motorists are urged to remain vigilant, use hazard lights, and whenever possible, move their vehicles to a safer location away from fast-moving traffic before attempting repairs.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of road safety awareness to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
