A heartbreaking incident has left the Sharpeville community in mourning after a 15-year-old boy lost his life in a tragic accident at a public swimming pool in Vuka on Saturday afternoon.
Tsoarelo Likana, a Grade 10 learner from Moshate Secondary School, reportedly drowned following what witnesses described as a freak accident. The young teenager had spent the day attending soccer matches at a nearby sports centre before heading to the swimming pool with friends to cool off from the intense heat.
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 15:30. It is believed that Tsoarelo slipped while near the edge of the pool and struck his chin on the poolside. The impact caused him to fall backward into the water, leaving him disoriented and struggling to stay afloat.
Friends who were present during the incident recounted the terrifying moments that followed. One of them explained that Tsoarelo appeared unable to swim properly after hitting his chin. Acting quickly, the friend jumped into the pool and managed to pull him out with the help of others. They then attempted to perform CPR in an effort to save his life.
Another friend described the confusion and panic that unfolded as they realized Tsoarelo was missing from their group. After asking around, they were informed that he had been seen struggling in the water. This prompted them to search for him beneath the surface, where they eventually found him.
Despite their efforts and the arrival of emergency services, Tsoarelo could not be revived.
His mother, Nkoboi Likana, shared her devastation following the loss of her son. She said she received a distressing call from one of the people who had accompanied him to the games, informing her that her son had drowned. Shortly after, medics contacted the family to say they were trying to save him. Tragically, they later confirmed his passing.
“When I arrived at the swimming pool, there were police, paramedics, and a lifeguard already on the scene,” she said.
Describing her son, Nkoboi spoke of a loving and cheerful child who brought joy to those around him. “He was a sweet boy who loved to joke. He had big dreams and was very ambitious. I had hoped for a bright future for him,” she said. “Now my heart is broken. I feel lost in darkness.”
The sudden death has deeply affected not only the family but also friends and members of the local community, who gathered at the swimming pool to pay their respects and support one another during this difficult time.
At the time of reporting, police had not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
The tragedy serves as a painful reminder of how quickly accidents can happen, even in familiar and recreational environments.
