Residents of Delft in the Western Cape are reeling in shock after the brutal killing of a 58-year-old woman, affectionately known in the community as a hardworking “gogo.” The elderly woman was gunned down inside her home on Thursday night, 9 April 2026, in what is believed to be a crime linked to extortion.
According to reports, the victim made a living by selling chicken on the streets near a local tyre shop. Like many informal traders, she worked hard daily just to survive and support herself. Her tragic death has highlighted the growing dangers faced by small business owners in vulnerable communities.

Community members say the gogo had recently been approached by a group of young men who allegedly demanded that she pay a so-called “protection fee.” These fees are often forced on small traders by criminal groups who threaten violence if payments are not made.
A resident shared that the elderly woman had refused to comply, explaining that she was already struggling financially and simply could not afford to pay. Despite her situation, the alleged threats did not stop.
On the night of the incident, the woman had just returned home from work. It is believed that at around 8:30pm, armed suspects entered her house. They initially searched for her in the sitting room but did not find her. The attackers then moved to the bedroom, where they found her and fatally shot her.
Police later confirmed that the victim was discovered in her bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head. She was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel. Authorities also reported that the suspects fled after the shooting, taking an undisclosed amount of cash and cellphones.
The motive for the murder is still under investigation, but it is widely suspected to be linked to extortion activities targeting informal traders in the area. This incident is not isolated, as similar cases have been reported across parts of Cape Town, where criminal groups are increasingly targeting small business owners who are unable to pay protection fees.
Police have since opened a murder case and are actively searching for the suspects involved. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation.
The killing has sparked fear and anger within the Delft community, with many residents calling for stronger action against extortion gangs. For locals, the tragedy is a painful reminder of how crime continues to threaten even the most vulnerable — including elderly citizens simply trying to earn an honest living.
As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of a woman who was known for her resilience and determination. Her death has left a deep scar, raising urgent questions about safety, justice, and the protection of small traders across the country.
