A sombre gathering meant to honour the deceased turned into a devastating tragedy in Limpopo, where multiple mourners lost their lives and dozens more fell seriously ill after eating food served at a funeral.
The heartbreaking incident took place in Mmotong-wa-Bogobe village, near Polokwane, over the weekend. What began as a routine funeral quickly descended into chaos when attendees started experiencing severe symptoms shortly after consuming the meal provided.
According to reports, mourners began complaining of intense stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea, and severe headaches. Panic spread rapidly as more people fell ill, forcing families and community members to rush victims to nearby hospitals and clinics for urgent medical care.

Health facilities in the area, including Lebowakgomo Hospital, were soon overwhelmed as large numbers of patients arrived seeking treatment. It is reported that more than 70 people were hospitalised, while others were treated at surrounding clinics in areas such as Ga-Maja and Chuene.
Tragically, several lives were lost in the incident, including that of a young child, leaving families devastated and the community in deep mourning. The victims are believed to have come from different nearby areas, highlighting how widely the tragedy has affected local communities.
Authorities have since launched an urgent investigation to determine the exact cause of the suspected food poisoning. Early indications suggest that the food consumed at the funeral may have been contaminated, although it remains unclear whether this happened accidentally or if other factors were involved. Law enforcement officials and health authorities are working together to gather evidence, conduct post-mortems, and analyse food samples.
Community leaders have expressed shock and sadness, describing the incident as one of the most distressing events the area has experienced in recent years. A local councillor confirmed that while many patients have since been discharged after receiving treatment, others remain under medical care as doctors continue to monitor their condition.
Officials have urged residents to remain calm and allow investigations to continue without interference. They have also appealed to anyone with information that could help uncover what happened to come forward.
The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns about food safety at large gatherings, particularly in rural areas where meals are often prepared in bulk. Experts warn that improper handling, poor storage, or contamination of food can have deadly consequences, especially when many people are served at once.
As investigations continue, grieving families are left searching for answers while trying to come to terms with their sudden loss. What was meant to be a moment of remembrance has instead become a painful reminder of how quickly lives can be changed by unforeseen tragedy.
