A devastating fire has claimed the life of 26-year-old Themba Mkhize, leaving the Trenance Park community in Verulam reeling with grief. The tragic incident occurred on the night of Monday, April 27, 2026, when a blaze tore through his informal dwelling, reducing it to ashes within minutes.
According to reports, the fire broke out shortly before 11:00 PM. Residents nearby were alerted by thick smoke and flames rapidly spreading from the small structure. Panic quickly gripped the neighborhood as community members rushed to help, forming a bucket brigade in a desperate attempt to extinguish the fire.

Despite their courageous efforts, the flames spread too quickly. The highly flammable materials commonly used in informal housing—such as wood, plastic, and corrugated iron—fueled the blaze, making it nearly impossible to control. Within a short time, the shack collapsed under the intense heat, trapping anyone inside.
Emergency responders from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrived at the scene following multiple distress calls. However, by the time they got there, the structure had already been completely destroyed. The eThekwini Fire Department later managed to extinguish the remaining flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes.

The most heartbreaking moment came after the fire was brought under control. Themba’s father, who lives on the same property in a nearby building, had last seen his son earlier that day. After being alerted to the fire, he watched helplessly as the flames consumed the structure, fearing the worst.
Sadly, those fears were confirmed when responders discovered a body trapped beneath the collapsed remains of the shack. Themba Mkhize was identified at the scene by his father, marking a deeply emotional and painful moment for the family and the community.
This tragic incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by residents living in informal settlements. Fires are a recurring threat, particularly as colder months approach and people rely on candles, paraffin stoves, and other open-flame heating methods. These conditions significantly increase the risk of accidental fires.
Several factors contribute to the high risk and deadly nature of shack fires. Homes are often built very close to each other, allowing flames to spread rapidly. The materials used in construction ignite easily, while limited access routes can delay emergency services from reaching the scene in time.
Authorities have since opened an inquest to determine the exact cause of the fire. While no foul play is suspected, investigators are looking into whether a cooking device or lighting source may have sparked the blaze.
In the wake of this tragedy, emergency services have urged residents to exercise extreme caution. They emphasize the importance of not leaving candles or paraffin lamps unattended and ensuring that heating devices are used safely.
For the Mkhize family, the loss is immeasurable. Themba is remembered as a quiet and respectful young man who was part of the fabric of his community. As preparations for his funeral begin, the charred remains of his home stand as a painful reminder of how quickly life can be lost.
This heartbreaking event serves as a stark warning about the urgent need for improved housing safety and awareness. Behind every fire statistic is a human story—and in this case, a life cut tragically short.
