Shock and sadness have gripped the Eastern Cape following the tragic murder of Chris Hani District Municipality Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Corporate Services, Thumeka Bikwana, who was shot dead at her home in Tshatshu Village.
According to reports, the incident happened on the night of Monday, 4 May 2026, at Bikwana’s residence in the Cacadu area. Police have since launched a murder investigation, but no arrests have been made so far.
The killing has left residents, political leaders, and municipal officials devastated, as Bikwana was widely respected for her dedication to public service and community development. Her death also marks yet another violent attack on political leaders in the region, raising fresh concerns about political killings in the Eastern Cape.

Police spokespersons confirmed that authorities opened a murder case after Bikwana’s body was discovered with gunshot wounds inside her home. Reports indicate that her driver became concerned after waiting outside for an extended period while she failed to come out. A witness later went to investigate and reportedly found the front door open before discovering Bikwana lying in a pool of blood.
The motive behind the murder remains unknown at this stage, and investigators are still working to determine who may be responsible. The case has reportedly been transferred to the Provincial Organised Crime Detectives for further investigation. Police have appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information that could help solve the case.
In a statement released by the Chris Hani District Municipality, officials described Bikwana’s death as a painful loss for the municipality and the broader community. Municipal spokesperson Dr Sandiso Tyembile praised her years of service, saying she dedicated nearly two decades to serving the people under different leadership structures and municipal portfolios.
Bikwana reportedly served in several important departments, including Budget and Treasury, Technical Services, Special Programmes, and Corporate Services. Municipal leaders said her commitment, discipline, and leadership earned her respect among colleagues and residents alike.
Her murder comes less than a year after another political figure, Emalahleni Local Municipality chief whip Xoliseka Lali, was also gunned down in his home in Komani. The repeated attacks on political leaders have sparked growing fears over safety and violence targeting public representatives in the province.
Community members have since expressed shock and anger over the incident, with many calling for justice and stronger protection for councillors and political leaders. Messages of condolence continue to pour in from various organisations and political structures across the country.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge as police continue their search for the suspects behind the deadly shooting. Funeral and memorial arrangements for Bikwana are expected to be announced by the municipality in the coming days.
