A family in Esikhawini, northern KwaZulu-Natal, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a two-year-old girl who allegedly died after consuming chips believed to have been purchased from a local tuckshop.
The tragic incident has left relatives devastated and searching for answers as they call for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

According to family members, little Anele Tshabalala began showing signs of illness shortly after eating the snack on Sunday morning. What started as complaints of stomach discomfort quickly turned into a medical emergency, leaving loved ones shocked by the speed at which her condition worsened.
Anele’s aunt, Khanyisile Chili, said the toddler appeared healthy before consuming the chips. However, approximately an hour later, she started experiencing severe stomach pains. Concerned family members rushed to seek medical assistance as her condition deteriorated.
Chili explained that the family was later informed that poisoning was suspected to be the cause of the child’s death. She said doctors who treated Anele indicated that toxic substances may have played a role in the tragedy.
According to Chili, the toddler had last eaten a meal on Saturday evening. On Sunday morning, while breakfast was still being prepared, she reportedly ate the chips. Sadly, she never got the chance to eat the meal her family was preparing for her.
The incident has sparked concern among community members, many of whom are worried about the safety of food products sold by informal retailers. The family’s allegations have also renewed discussions around food safety regulations and the need for stricter monitoring of products sold in local communities.
Anele’s grandmother, Qondile Cele, described the loss as unbearable and said the family is struggling to come to terms with the death of a child who had her entire future ahead of her.
“We were looking forward to watching her grow up and achieve great things. Losing her in this way is extremely painful,” she said.
Cele added that the family is seeking justice and hopes authorities will determine exactly what happened. She also expressed concern about reports that the tuckshop involved is no longer operating and that the owner cannot currently be located.
The grieving grandmother said the family is facing financial difficulties, as there are no employed members in the household. The unexpected funeral expenses have added to their burden during an already devastating period.
She believes those found responsible should be held accountable and assist the family with the costs associated with laying the child to rest.
Meanwhile, authorities are expected to continue investigating the matter to establish the exact cause of death. Medical examinations and further inquiries will play a key role in determining whether the chips consumed by the toddler contained harmful substances.
As the investigation unfolds, the family remains focused on obtaining answers and justice for Anele. Community members have also expressed sympathy and support, hoping that the circumstances behind the young girl’s death will be fully uncovered and that measures will be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
