A heartbreaking tragedy has left the Modimolle community in Limpopo in mourning after a mother and her three young children lost their lives when a fire destroyed their shack while they were asleep.
The devastating incident happened on Monday night in Phagameng Extension 12, where the family’s home was engulfed in flames. By the time emergency responders arrived, the fire had already claimed the lives of all four occupants.
The children who died were just three, 10 and 11 years old. The family was reportedly asleep when the blaze broke out, leaving them with no chance to escape the rapidly spreading flames.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the deadly fire. At this stage, the exact cause remains unknown, and officials are working to establish how the blaze started.
The tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many residents expressing sadness over the deaths of the young children and their mother. Community members have described the incident as one of the most painful tragedies to affect the area in recent months.
Modimolle Local Municipality spokesperson Michael Makungo confirmed that Mayor Anna Mboweni and Chief Whip Mokgadi Dayimane have extended their heartfelt condolences to the grieving Masalesa family.
According to Makungo, municipal leaders are deeply saddened by the incident and are standing with the family during this difficult time. He explained that the fire completely destroyed the shack in which the family had been sleeping, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives.
Mayor Mboweni has also appealed to businesses, community organisations, faith-based groups and members of the public to support the bereaved family. She encouraged those who are able to assist with funeral arrangements or provide any other form of assistance to come forward and help ease the family’s burden.
The municipality believes that community support will play a vital role in helping the family cope with both the emotional and financial challenges brought about by the tragedy.
Shack fires remain a serious concern in many informal settlements across South Africa, particularly during the winter months when families often rely on candles, paraffin stoves, heaters and other heating devices to stay warm. These fires can spread rapidly because homes are built close together and are often constructed using highly flammable materials.
Safety experts continue to urge residents to exercise caution when using heating equipment, candles and open flames, especially before going to bed. They also encourage communities to install smoke alarms where possible and ensure that electrical connections are safe to reduce the risk of deadly fires.
As investigations continue, the people of Modimolle are mourning the loss of a mother and her three children whose lives were cut tragically short. Their deaths serve as another painful reminder of the dangers shack fires pose and the importance of fire safety awareness in vulnerable communities.
