South African singer Danny K has spoken publicly for the first time about the heartbreaking loss of his wife, Lisa Koppel, revealing that she had privately battled colorectal cancer for three years.
Lisa, who was 41, passed away over the weekend after undergoing treatment in South Africa and abroad. Her death has left her family, friends and loved ones devastated.
The mother of three was a former model who later pursued a career in law. She was also the daughter of prominent attorney Billy Gundelfinger.
Danny K remembers his wife
Taking to social media, Danny K paid an emotional tribute to his late wife while sharing details about the illness she had deliberately kept away from the public eye.
According to the singer, Lisa faced her diagnosis with remarkable strength and determination. The family explored various treatment options, travelling and seeking medical assistance in different places in the hope of finding a solution.
Despite their efforts, Lisa ultimately lost her battle with the disease.
Danny explained that his wife had chosen to keep her health struggles private because she did not want sympathy or public attention. Her biggest concern was reportedly protecting the couple’s three children and allowing them to maintain as much normality as possible.
He described Lisa as gentle, humble and courageous, saying that she continued to inspire those around her despite the difficult circumstances she was facing.
Her passing has left the Koppel and Gundelfinger families heartbroken. Danny also reflected on the devastating impact of losing his wife, while their children have been left without their mother.
Lisa’s legacy could help others
Although Lisa kept her diagnosis private during her illness, Danny said her family had decided to reveal it following her death to create greater awareness around colorectal cancer.
He highlighted concerns about the disease affecting younger people and encouraged individuals to take persistent symptoms seriously and seek medical advice.
Colorectal cancer affects the colon or rectum and can develop when abnormal cells grow in the bowel. In some cases, polyps can form and eventually become cancerous if they are not detected and treated.
Symptoms can include rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, abdominal discomfort and persistent bloating. However, symptoms can vary, making medical assessment important when unusual changes continue.
Screening can also help detect abnormalities before they develop into cancer. Colonoscopy is one of the tests used to identify and, in some cases, remove potentially dangerous polyps.
Treatment for colorectal cancer depends on factors such as the stage and location of the disease and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or other targeted treatments.
Danny said Lisa had hoped that one day her experience could be used to help educate others about colorectal cancer and the importance of early detection.
Although she did not get the opportunity to do so herself, her family now hopes to continue that mission in her memory.
For Danny, Lisa’s illness will not be the defining story of her life. Instead, he wants her to be remembered for the love, kindness, courage and devotion she showed towards her family and those around her.
