A tragic incident at a dam in Thokoza, Springs, has left a family mourning after twin brothers reportedly drowned while carrying out a traditional cleansing ritual.
According to reports, the brothers had travelled to the dam with two male friends. It is alleged that the group had been drinking alcohol before the incident occurred.
The twins were reportedly following instructions they had received from a traditional healer to perform a cleansing ritual in the water. They had allegedly been given certain items to use as part of the ritual and entered the dam to carry out the instructions.
Their two friends reportedly remained nearby and also entered the water to swim. However, what began as a routine outing quickly turned into a tragedy when the friends noticed that the twins were no longer visible.
According to the information available, the friends realised that the brothers had disappeared beneath the surface of the water. They reportedly saw bubbles emerging from the dam but could not locate the twins or determine exactly what had happened to them.
The friends then raised the alarm and called for assistance. Emergency personnel and police were alerted, prompting a search operation at the dam.
Diving teams were brought in to search the water for the missing brothers. After an extensive search, the bodies of the twins were eventually recovered from the dam.
The brothers were declared dead at the scene.
The incident has reportedly left relatives, friends and members of the community devastated, with the circumstances surrounding the drowning likely to form part of the ongoing investigation.
Drowning incidents involving dams, rivers and other bodies of water remain a serious concern, particularly when people enter unfamiliar or potentially dangerous waters. Alcohol consumption can also increase the risks associated with swimming by affecting judgment, coordination and the ability to respond to emergencies.

The incident serves as a reminder for members of the public to exercise extreme caution around dams and other bodies of water, particularly when swimming or conducting activities that require entering the water.
