The family of 25-year-old Tamia Erin Fredericks is mourning the devastating loss of a young woman who was allegedly shot and killed while visiting someone in Wentworth, Durban.
Fredericks, from Newlands East, was four months pregnant with her first child when her life was tragically cut short on Sunday, 16 August 2026.
According to information surrounding the incident, Fredericks had travelled to the Wentworth area to visit a relative or friend. She was reportedly walking alone along Weist Road in the Bluff area when she was shot.
Her body was later found lying in the road with gunshot wounds. Her mother, Jenny Fredericks, subsequently said that her daughter had been shot in the head.
The circumstances surrounding the killing remain under investigation. Wentworth police opened a murder case following the incident, but the motive had not been established at the time of the latest reports. Police also indicated that Fredericks was alone when she was attacked.
By early September, no arrests had reportedly been made in connection with the murder.
The circumstances have left Fredericks’ family searching for answers, with her mother maintaining that she does not believe her daughter was the victim of a random shooting.
Jenny has reportedly said she believes Tamia was deliberately targeted and that the killing was not connected to the gang violence commonly associated with parts of Wentworth.
Some early reports and community members also raised suspicions that the shooting could have been a targeted attack. There were claims that a man allegedly approached Fredericks, shot her in the head and fled the scene. However, these details have not been confirmed by police and remain part of the information surrounding the investigation.
The tragedy was made even more painful by the fact that Fredericks was carrying her unborn child. Her family was forced to prepare not only to bury a young daughter, but also to mourn the loss of a baby who never had the opportunity to be born.
A funeral was held for Fredericks and her unborn child shortly after the killing, as relatives, friends and members of the community gathered to remember them.
Her mother has continued to appeal for those responsible to be identified and brought before the courts. She has expressed her determination to see justice for her daughter and her unborn grandchild.
For the family, the unanswered questions surrounding Tamia’s death have made the grieving process even more difficult.
