The Victoria West community in the Northern Cape is mourning the death of 16-year-old Grade 10 learner Lee Jandra “Meitjie” Sabbat, who died after a vehicle crashed into a wall.
The tragic incident reportedly happened when a Toyota Yaris lost control and crashed into a wall in Victoria West. Lee Jandra had reportedly been sent by her grandmother to a nearby shop when the elderly woman heard a loud crash.
Concerned by the sound, her grandmother rushed outside to find the teenager trapped between the vehicle and the wall. Although Lee Jandra was still alive when she was found, she later succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
The teenager’s death has left her family devastated, with those close to her now mourning the loss of a young life that had so much ahead of it.
The crash also left several other people injured. The 22-year-old driver and four passengers were transported to hospital for medical treatment following the collision. A 39-year-old male passenger later died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. The matter is being investigated as a case of culpable homicide, while authorities work to establish what caused the Toyota Yaris to crash.
The exact circumstances leading up to the incident have not yet been confirmed, and the investigation is expected to provide further clarity.
Lee Jandra was remembered by those who knew her as a gentle, humble and caring young girl. She was passionate about netball and drama, activities that allowed her to express herself and spend time doing things she enjoyed.
Her death has been particularly painful for her family, friends, classmates and members of her school community, who are now coming to terms with the loss of a teenager whose life was cut short.
For her loved ones, Lee Jandra will be remembered not only for the circumstances of her tragic death but also for the person she was while she was alive — a young girl with dreams, interests and a future that was still unfolding.
As the investigation continues, family and community members are left to grieve and support one another during this difficult period.
Lee Jandra’s passing is a painful reminder of how quickly a road incident can change the lives of many people. Her family has been left to face the loss of a beloved granddaughter and young family member, while her school community mourns the loss of one of its learners.
