A devastating head-on collision in Mpumalanga has claimed the lives of eight people, including a pastor and his wife, leaving several families and members of a church community grieving the sudden loss of their loved ones.
The fatal crash occurred at about 1:30am on Sunday, 13 September 2026, along the N17 toll road between Ermelo and Davel, near the Ermelo Toll Plaza.
According to authorities, seven of the victims were travelling together in a Volkswagen sedan when their vehicle was involved in a collision with a Toyota sedan. The Toyota was reportedly carrying only its driver, who was also killed in the crash.
The seven people travelling together were from the Zululand region of KwaZulu-Natal and had been returning to Johannesburg after attending a church ordination event in Manguzi.
Among those who died were Pastor Nhlabathi and his wife, Mrs Dumisile MaMlambo Nhlabathi. Their deaths have sent shockwaves through the church community and among those who knew the couple.
The other victims travelling in the Volkswagen were reportedly Mr Dumisane Sithole, his wife, Mrs Pinky Mambonambi Sithole, their two children, and Mrs Cora Mambonambi Simelane.
Pastor Sithole was reportedly a leader at the Africa Evangelical Church in Johannesburg and originally came from Manguzi in the uMhlabuyalingana area of northern KwaZulu-Natal.
The deaths of Pastor Sithole, his wife and their two children have compounded the tragedy, with relatives and church members mourning the loss of an entire family in a single incident.
Mpumalanga authorities confirmed that the eight fatalities comprised six adults and two minors. No other injuries were reported following the collision.
The cause of the crash has not yet been established. Authorities said investigations are continuing and that reckless or negligent driving has not been ruled out.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma has assembled a team to work with the families of the seven victims from the province. The team is expected to assist relatives and provide support as arrangements are made following the tragedy.
The crash has once again highlighted the dangers faced by motorists travelling long distances on South Africa’s roads, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours.
For the families involved, however, the focus remains on mourning and coming to terms with an unimaginable loss. Several loved ones were travelling together after a significant religious gathering, only for the journey home to end in tragedy.
Church members and relatives are now remembering the victims for the roles they played in their families and communities, while authorities continue working to establish exactly what led to the fatal collision.
As investigations continue, the families affected face the difficult task of laying their loved ones to rest and beginning the long process of healing after a tragedy that has taken eight lives.
