Police are still working to establish the nationality of a man arrested in connection with the murder of a woman whose body was discovered in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng.
The suspect was arrested following the discovery of a woman’s body in an open field near the R21 in Kempton Park on 15 July. According to police, the woman was found naked and had been restrained with cable ties.
The man appeared in court on Wednesday, but the case was postponed to a later date. He remains in custody at the Modderbee Correctional Facility in Benoni while investigations continue.
Police have not yet officially confirmed the suspect’s nationality. Deputy National Police Commissioner for Policing, Lieutenant-General Tebello Mosikili, said investigators are using the suspect’s fingerprints to establish his identity and nationality.
Mosikili said police had received information suggesting that the suspect may not be a South African citizen. However, she stressed that this had not yet been officially confirmed and that investigators still needed to determine which country he may be from.
Authorities are also investigating whether the suspect could have any connection to other bodies discovered in the Ekurhuleni area.
The case has drawn increased attention following the discovery of several women’s bodies in the region. Police said two additional bodies were found in the same vicinity after the first body was recovered.
Investigators are now gathering further intelligence to determine whether the cases are connected and whether the arrested man could potentially be linked to any of the other murders.
Police have cautioned that investigations are still under way and that no definitive connection between the suspect and the other cases has been established at this stage.
The investigation comes amid growing concern over the number of women whose bodies have been found across parts of Ekurhuleni. Authorities are expected to continue examining forensic evidence, intelligence and other information that could help establish what happened to the victims and whether there is a wider connection between the cases.
For now, police say confirming the suspect’s identity and nationality remains an important part of the investigation. Officials also need to establish whether he can be linked to any additional crimes before drawing conclusions about the broader cases.
The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues, while police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and determine whether there are connections to other incidents in the area.
