A 62-year-old teacher from Teto Secondary School in Welkom, Free State, is recovering in hospital after she was allegedly attacked and stabbed several times at her home in Dagbreek.
The incident reportedly took place on 23 September 2026 at the educator’s residence, where she was allegedly confronted by an individual who had been hiding inside the property.
According to reports, a Grade 11 learner from Teto Secondary School has been linked to the incident. The learner is alleged to have been inside the teacher’s home before the attack took place.
The educator reportedly sustained several injuries, including wounds to her head and hands. She was subsequently taken to hospital, where she remains under medical care.
The teacher has reportedly dedicated almost 40 years to education and has spent much of her career serving learners at Teto Secondary School.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and police have opened a criminal case. The matters being investigated reportedly include attempted murder, robbery with a weapon other than a firearm and residential burglary.

Authorities are expected to establish what happened before, during and after the alleged attack as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Free State Department of Education has condemned the incident and expressed concern over the attack on one of its educators. The department has also indicated that support is being provided to the teacher and her family as she recovers.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of educators, particularly when violence occurs in or around school communities. Teachers play an important role in supporting learners and maintaining learning environments, while their own safety remains an important concern.
However, the allegations against the learner have not been proven in court. The learner remains presumed innocent unless and until a court determines otherwise.
Police investigations are continuing, and further details may emerge as authorities gather statements and other evidence connected to the case.
For now, the focus remains on the teacher’s recovery and on establishing the full circumstances surrounding the alleged attack.
The incident has also prompted renewed calls for schools, families, communities and authorities to work together to address violence and ensure that educators can carry out their responsibilities in safe environments.
