A man has been arrested after the decomposed body of his elderly mother was discovered inside their home in Ilovu, south of Durban, more than two months after she was last seen.
The disturbing discovery was made after neighbours reportedly became concerned about the woman’s prolonged absence. According to the information available, residents had not seen the elderly woman for an extended period and eventually became suspicious when a strong and unpleasant smell began coming from the property.
Concerned neighbours went to the house to investigate. They were reportedly met with a grim scene when they discovered the woman’s decomposed remains inside the home.
Police were immediately called to the property and attended the scene. The woman’s son was subsequently arrested in connection with the discovery.

However, authorities have not yet established the circumstances surrounding the elderly woman’s death. It remains unclear when exactly she died, what caused her death or why her body remained inside the house for such a long period.
Police are continuing with their investigation as they work to determine what happened. The arrest does not, on its own, establish the circumstances of the woman’s death, and further information is expected as the investigation progresses.
The case has raised concern among residents in the Ilovu community, particularly because the woman had apparently not been seen for more than two months before her body was discovered.
The condition of the body means that investigators may need to rely on forensic examinations and other evidence to establish key details surrounding the death. The outcome of those investigations could provide more information about when the woman died and whether her death was the result of natural causes, an accident or possible criminal activity.
For now, police have not publicly confirmed a cause of death or provided details about what may have happened inside the home.
The arrested man is expected to face the legal process as investigators continue gathering information about the case. Any charges against him will need to be determined through the appropriate legal proceedings.
The incident has also highlighted concerns about vulnerable and elderly people who may go unnoticed when they are no longer regularly seen by neighbours or relatives. In this case, it was reportedly the unusual smell coming from the property that prompted neighbours to investigate and ultimately led to the discovery.
Police are expected to provide further details once more information becomes available and the investigation has progressed.
For now, the circumstances surrounding the elderly woman’s death remain under investigation, while her family and the Ilovu community await answers about what happened to her.
