**North West Police Arrest Suspect in Shocking Gender-Based Violence Case**

Authorities in North West have apprehended a 40-year-old man following the grim discovery of a 16-year-old girl’s body in a shallow grave in Matlhako 2 village, Vryburg. The suspect was handed over to police by his brother after an investigation revealed disturbing details about the crime.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, the Pudimoe police were alerted on Friday after a resident reported hearing a woman crying from a neighbor’s house on Thursday night. The situation raised suspicions when the neighbor and a friend were seen the next morning pushing a wheelbarrow with an unknown object inside.

### Discovery of the Shallow Grave

A search operation, involving law enforcement and community members, led to the discovery of what appeared to be a shallow grave near a stream in Matlhako 2 village. Near the site, police found a wheelbarrow and a spade, which further corroborated the allegations.

Upon exhumation, officers discovered the body of Boingotlo Makaota, a 16-year-old girl from the same village. The body was wrapped in a blanket and had visible head injuries as well as bruises on her thighs and legs. Makaota’s uncle positively identified her remains.

### Evidence Found at the Suspect’s Residence

Further investigations led police to the suspect’s home, where they found clothing belonging to the victim. However, the primary suspect was not present at the time. His accomplice, the man seen assisting him with the wheelbarrow, was taken in for questioning.

On Saturday evening, the suspect turned himself in after his brother handed him over to the authorities.

### Official Condemnation

The acting provincial commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, expressed outrage over the incident, labeling it another tragic case of gender-based violence. He emphasized the need for active community involvement and vigilance to prevent such crimes.

“This brutal incident could have been avoided if communities worked together to safeguard vulnerable members, especially women and children,” said Asaneng.

### A Call to Action

This harrowing incident highlights the ongoing scourge of gender-based violence in South Africa, where women and children continue to face alarming levels of violence. It serves as a reminder of the critical role communities play in addressing and preventing such atrocities.

The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue, with law enforcement committed to ensuring justice for the victim and her family.
