The grieving family of four-year-old Davin Africa is seeking financial assistance to lay their beloved child to rest.
Struggling to Afford a Funeral
Nearly two weeks after a tragic shooting in Wesbank claimed the young boy’s life, his family has been unable to afford the funeral expenses. Davin was fatally shot on February 14 while asleep in his home on Happiness Street.
The Tragic Incident
His mother, Undean Koopman, 38, recounted the heartbreaking moment, explaining that a bullet penetrated the walls of their wendy house, striking Davin in the back.
“Davin and his sister Keisha were both asleep. My husband was watching TV, and I was about to take a bath when we heard gunshots,” Undean said tearfully.
“We had to lie flat on the ground to avoid being shot. When the gunfire stopped, we rushed to our children.”
A Family’s Double Tragedy
This devastating loss comes just a year after Davin’s older sister, Kelly-Amber Koopman, was killed in a gang-related shooting. The 12-year-old girl was shot in November 2023 on Ou Plaas Street during load shedding.
No Arrests Made Yet
Despite the police confirming no arrests have been made in connection with Davin’s murder, the family remains focused on arranging his funeral.
Appeal for Financial Assistance
Undean shared the financial struggles they are facing, stating:
“We were told we could apply to the City for assistance, but the process could take up to three weeks. So, we started collecting money ourselves.”
The family has raised R4,500 so far, but they still need an additional R4,000 to purchase a coffin and secure a burial plot.
“The longer the body stays in the mortuary, the higher the penalty fees. The undertaker has already collected Davin’s body, and we are hoping to hold the funeral on Saturday,” Undean added.
