The South African entertainment industry came together in solemn unity to bid farewell to one of its brightest stars, Presley Chweneyagae, fondly known as “Cobra.” The 40-year-old award-winning actor, best remembered for his breakthrough role in the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi, was honoured in a moving funeral service held on Saturday, 7 June 2025, at the Akasia Community Hall in Tshwane.

The funeral drew a large crowd that included family, close friends, fellow actors, politicians, and devoted fans, all there to pay their last respects to a man whose talent touched millions. The emotional atmosphere reflected the deep sense of loss felt across the country following Presley’s sudden passing.

Several prominent figures from the local entertainment scene were in attendance, including actors Warren Masemola, Thembinkosi Mthembu, Winnie Ntshaba, Rami Chuene, Oros Mampofu, and the legendary Dr Jerry Mofokeng. Before the proceedings began, a poignant guard of honour was formed by Presley’s fellow actors, offering a symbolic and heartfelt final salute as his coffin was carried into the hall.

Dr Jerry Mofokeng, a respected figure in South African theatre and film, gave a touching tribute to the late actor. “Presley left us far too soon. Forty is still young. But in those years, he gave us a legacy that could span three decades. We must remember him with pride. He truly loved his craft, and that passion shone through in every performance,” Mofokeng said.

Fellow actors expressed their grief and admiration during the ceremony. Oros Mampofu reflected on the emotional difficulty of the past few days but emphasized the importance of celebrating Presley’s life. “It’s been a turbulent time for all of us. But today, we choose to celebrate the incredible man that Presley was. He poured his heart into his work, his family, and his community,” he shared.

Actress Rami Chuene also paid her respects, highlighting Presley’s professional dedication. “We have lost a giant. He respected his craft and gave his all to every role. Let’s continue to honour him by preserving the legacy he built,” she urged.

The day before his funeral, Presley had been filming the series Cobrizi, making the loss even more surreal for colleagues who had just seen him at work. The suddenness of his passing underscored the fragility of life and the profound impact he had on the South African entertainment industry.

Presley Chweneyagae was laid to rest at Zandfontein Cemetery. While his physical presence may be gone, the legacy he leaves behind — as a storyteller, performer, and cultural icon — will live on in the hearts of many.

As the curtain falls on his life, South Africa remembers Presley not just as “Cobra,” but as a symbol of artistic excellence, humility, and unwavering passion.
