South African Gqom star Babes Wodumo recently faced disappointment after failing to meet King Misuzulu kaZwelithini during the Heritage Day celebrations in KwaDukuza, north of Durban. The singer had attended the event with high hopes of meeting the Zulu monarch, but her wish did not come to fruition.
Reflecting on the experience, Babes Wodumo expressed awe at the cultural display, telling *TshisaLIVE*, “The Heritage Day experience was breathtaking. I saw Zulu culture in a different light. Everyone was rejoicing and proud to be Zulu. The colors, songs, and dances — it was amazing. I don’t regret attending such an incredible event.”
She had prepared words of admiration for the King, expressing her gratitude for his leadership: “Thank you for leading us with passion and no fear. As much as it was big shoes to fill, you took on the role with pride. We have no doubt you’ll lead us with integrity and honor. We trust you.”
However, Babes’ disappointment coincides with rumors of turbulence within the Zulu royal household. Allegations have surfaced suggesting that King Misuzulu’s marriage to his first wife, Queen Ntokozo kaMayisela-Zulu, is on shaky ground following his recent marriage to Queen Nomzamo KaMyeni-Zulu in May.
### Strains in the Zulu Royal Household
Sources close to the royal family report that Queen Ntokozo has been feeling increasingly isolated and sidelined since King Misuzulu married his third wife. This sense of marginalization has allegedly led to Queen Ntokozo’s absence from several important royal events, including the Annual Reed Dance at Enyokeni Palace, the King’s 50th birthday celebration, and the Umkhosi Welembe/Shaka Zulu Day commemorations.
It is believed that Queen Ntokozo’s absence stems from feelings of embarrassment and being overshadowed by the newly married Queen Nomzamo. Sources also claim that King Misuzulu has been prioritizing his new wife, even during official duties.
The situation has reportedly escalated to the point where Queen Ntokozo has moved out of the royal palace in Ulundi. She is now said to be residing in a Durban apartment with her two children. The couple officially tied the knot on May 6, 2021, a day before the funeral of the King’s mother, Queen Mantfombi Zulu.
### Marital Woes Resurface
This is not the first time rumors of discord in the royal marriage have emerged. In February last year, *Sunday World* reported on challenges within the royal household. Women and children’s rights activist Sihle Sibisi had made headlines when she was linked romantically to the King. The same article also alleged that Queen Ntokozo was involved in an extramarital affair, further fueling rumors of unrest in the royal marriage.
Amid these tensions, Babes Wodumo, who is also navigating personal challenges after the death of her husband, Mampintsha, in December 2022, had hoped to connect with the King. The singer has expressed admiration for his leadership and was eager to share her sentiments with him.
### Babes Wodumo’s Musical Journey Continues
Despite her disappointment, Babes Wodumo remains focused on her music career. She recently collaborated with DJ Kotin on the track “Nzo Nzo Nzo” and is currently filming music videos for her upcoming album.
“I’m already shooting music videos. My team thought it’s best to release the album in October because it will immediately give them that December feeling,” she explained.
The Gqom star is also gearing up for a performance this weekend, where she promises to deliver an unforgettable show for her fans. “I’m taking everyone on a ride through my musical journey. I’ll be dancing until my lungs give out. I want to leave that stage knowing I gave my fans everything,” she added.
Though Babes Wodumo may not have met King Misuzulu at the Heritage Day celebrations, her career continues to thrive as she prepares for her album release and upcoming performances. Meanwhile, the royal family remains under public scrutiny as rumors of tension persist.
