Siyabonga Nene, widely known as Big Zulu, has become a household name in South African hip-hop, with hits like *Imali Eningi* and *Umbayimbayi* dominating the airwaves. However, his journey to stardom is one of resilience, determination, and an unshakable love for music.

Growing Up in Bergville

Big Zulu hails from Bergville, a small village nestled in the Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal. From an early age, music was an integral part of his life and community. In his village, music transcended entertainment, serving as a means of expressing joy, sorrow, and even conflict.

“Even now, when we’re sitting together with other men, I’m always the first person to break out and start singing,” he shared during an interview on the King David Studio podcast.

These formative experiences helped shape his deep connection with music and laid the groundwork for his future career.

Discovering Hip-Hop

Big Zulu’s passion for rapping blossomed during his school years in Johannesburg. Attending hip-hop sessions in the Vaal, he was captivated by the craft and started honing his skills.

“I used to see kids carrying backpacks, rapping, and I’d ask them what they were doing. So I ended up adopting it,” he recalled.

Balancing his aspirations with his job as a taxi driver, he would often leave his taxi at the rank to attend rap battles and competitions.

The Turning Point

A pivotal moment came in 2013 when Big Zulu entered and won the Red Bull-sponsored *Back to the City* competition. This victory catapulted him into the spotlight, earning him recognition in the South African hip-hop scene.

Despite his growing fame, Big Zulu remained grounded. He continued driving his taxi even as he collected awards at prestigious events, including the South African Hip-Hop Awards.

#### A Journey of Perseverance

Big Zulu’s rise to success is a testament to his hard work and dedication. From his humble beginnings in Bergville to becoming a celebrated rapper and songwriter, he has inspired countless fans with his story. His unique style, deeply rooted in his Zulu heritage, sets him apart in the music industry.

Today, Big Zulu is not just a musician but a cultural icon, proving that with determination and passion, one can overcome any obstacle to achieve greatness.
