A devastating tragedy has rocked the Choba informal settlement in Olievenhoutbosch, Pretoria, where six people lost their lives in a horrifying tavern shooting late last night. The peaceful evening turned into a nightmare when unknown armed assailants stormed the establishment and began firing randomly at patrons, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo, the brutal attack occurred just after 10 p.m. at a popular local tavern known to be a regular hangout spot for residents. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and chaos as gunshots rang out, forcing people to flee for their lives.
“Several suspects entered the tavern and, without warning, opened fire on those inside. Six individuals were fatally shot and declared dead at the scene,” Colonel Masondo confirmed.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, where paramedics worked quickly to assist the injured. At least four more victims sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their conditions remain critical.
The motive for the shooting is currently unknown, and the identities of the victims have not yet been released. Police have launched an urgent manhunt for the suspects and are calling on anyone with information to come forward.
Preliminary investigations suggest the attack may have been targeted, although authorities have not ruled out the possibility of gang-related violence or a dispute that escalated out of control. “We are looking into several leads, but it is still too early to confirm the exact cause of the shooting,” added Masondo.
Local residents say crime in the Choba area has been on the rise, with many expressing fear for their safety. Community leader Nomvula Mahlangu said the incident has left the neighbourhood shaken.
“We are heartbroken. These were our brothers, friends, and neighbours. The violence in our community is out of control, and we’re pleading with the police to take serious action,” Mahlangu said tearfully.
The tavern owner, who was too traumatised to speak to the media, is believed to be cooperating with the police investigation. Surveillance footage from the tavern and surrounding properties is being reviewed to help identify the gunmen.
The South African Police Service has appealed to the public not to share graphic images of the victims out of respect for their families. They have also promised increased patrols in the area to prevent further violence.
This incident adds to a worrying trend of tavern shootings across South Africa in recent months, where alcohol venues have increasingly become hotspots for violent crime.
As the community grapples with the loss of six lives, calls are growing louder for tighter gun control, better policing, and improved safety in informal settlements.
