A significant breakthrough has been made in the investigation into the brutal murder of 30-year-old Olorato Mongale, whose body was found dumped in Lombardy, near Alexandra in northern Johannesburg over the weekend.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a nationwide manhunt for two suspects, Philangenkosi Makhanya and Fezile Ngubane, who are believed to be directly involved in the crime. Their photographs have been released to the public, with authorities urging citizens to help locate them and report any sightings.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the investigation took a crucial turn after a Volkswagen Polo suspected to have been used in the murder was found in Phoenix, Durban. The vehicle was discovered at a panel-beating workshop during a search conducted by a multidisciplinary team led by the SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Task Team.
“Forensic experts examined the vehicle and found traces of blood inside,” said Brigadier Mathe. “This discovery has provided us with critical forensic evidence linking the suspects to the crime.”
The police traced the vehicle by following a lead from a lodge in Kew, Johannesburg, where the suspects had booked a room. From there, the investigation led them to a residence in KwaMashu, Durban, before locating the car in Phoenix.
An elderly man, believed to be the owner of the car, has been taken into custody as investigations continue.
Authorities are urging the suspects to surrender at their nearest police station. Brigadier Mathe emphasized the importance of public assistance in distributing the suspects’ images to help bring them to justice. Anyone with information is asked to contact Brigadier Nama at 082 778 9035.
Mongale’s death has sparked public outrage and renewed concerns about the safety of women in South Africa. She was last seen alive before going on a date, and her phone’s last known location helped friends trace her belongings. The disturbing details surrounding the case, including the use of a vehicle with a cloned license plate, have highlighted the calculated nature of the crime.
The murder has drawn widespread media attention and emotional tributes from those who knew her. Prominent figures, including broadcaster Criselda Kananda, have spoken out about the tragedy, calling for stronger protections for women and more decisive action against gender-based violence.
As the search for the two suspects intensifies, the police remain hopeful that the public’s cooperation will help bring closure to Mongale’s family and ensure that those responsible face the full force of the law.
Anyone with information related to the suspects’ whereabouts is encouraged to contact law enforcement immediately.
