As the festive season kicks off, the City of Cape Town has taken decisive action to curb public drinking and enhance safety by destroying 3,000 litres of confiscated alcohol. The alcohol, seized during law-enforcement operations in the first two weeks of December, was destroyed in line with the City’s seasonal safety and law-enforcement readiness strategy.

Authorities emphasized that public consumption of alcohol remains illegal, and law enforcement will maintain stringent oversight throughout the holiday period. On average, Cape Town destroys around 15,000 litres of alcohol annually, seized from various routine operations aimed at maintaining public order and safety.
JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, highlighted the dangers posed by alcohol consumption in public spaces. “Liquor in public places contributes disproportionately to injuries, accidents, and fatalities,” Smith stated. “Pedestrian deaths, in particular, are alarmingly high. When vehicles collide with pedestrians, the pedestrian almost always suffers the worst outcome. Alcohol-related injuries on beaches, including drownings, are also significant. Evidence shows that reducing public alcohol consumption dramatically decreases such incidents. Drunk driving continues to be a major concern as well.”

The City’s efforts form part of a broader strategy to protect residents and visitors during a period historically marked by increased accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Authorities urge compliance with liquor laws and responsible behavior to minimize harm.
“The festive season should be a time of celebration, but it must also be safe for everyone,” Smith added. “We encourage residents and tourists alike to respect the law, avoid public drinking, and make choices that prevent accidents and loss of life.”
Public drinking has long been associated with various safety risks, including traffic accidents, drownings, and violent incidents. By confiscating and destroying alcohol, Cape Town authorities aim to deter illegal behavior, promote public safety, and reduce the strain on emergency services during the high-demand holiday season.
City law-enforcement teams have been particularly vigilant over the past weeks, patrolling public spaces and intercepting illegal alcohol sales. The destruction of 3,000 litres of liquor sends a clear message that violations of public drinking regulations will not be tolerated.
The City also reminds citizens that routine law-enforcement operations throughout the year help keep communities safe and that public cooperation is essential. Compliance with existing alcohol regulations, coupled with responsible personal conduct, is seen as key to reducing injuries, fatalities, and other negative outcomes associated with excessive or public drinking.
As Cape Town prepares for the end-of-year festivities, the destruction of confiscated alcohol represents a proactive step to safeguard public health and safety. Residents and visitors are urged to celebrate responsibly and contribute to creating a safer environment for all.
