The KwaDweshula community in Umzumbe Local Municipality came together in grief this past weekend as four members of the Cele family were laid to rest following their brutal killing on New Year’s Eve. The funeral marked a heartbreaking end to a tragedy that has shaken both the local community and the nation at large at the very start of 2026.

Grace Cele and her three children — her son Scelo and daughters Lindokuhle and Nondumiso — were buried amid scenes of deep sorrow as family, friends, neighbours and community leaders gathered to bid them a final farewell. The atmosphere was heavy with emotion, as mourners struggled to comprehend the violent loss of an entire family inside the very home where they should have been safe.
The four were fatally shot late on the night of 31 December when unknown gunmen allegedly stormed the Cele family home and opened fire. The attack was swift and ruthless, leaving no chance for escape. News of the killings spread quickly, sending shockwaves across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond, and prompting widespread outrage and calls for justice.

Relatives of the deceased have expressed confusion and pain over the motive behind the attack. According to family members, the extreme level of violence does not appear to align with an ordinary house robbery, raising fears that the killings may have been targeted. They have appealed to police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to uncover the truth and bring those responsible to account.
During the funeral service, speakers paid tribute to the lives of the victims, describing Grace Cele as a devoted mother and her children as loving, respectful and full of promise. Clergy members urged the community to remain united and to support the grieving family during an unimaginably difficult time, while also calling for peace in a society increasingly plagued by violent crime.

KwaZulu-Natal authorities have condemned the killings and assured the family of their full support. Police have reiterated their call for anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward, stressing that community cooperation is crucial in solving violent crimes. As of now, no arrests have been confirmed, and the search for the perpetrators continues.
The tragedy has reignited concerns about rising violent crime, particularly in rural areas of the province. Community leaders used the funeral as a platform to highlight the fear many residents live with daily, calling for stronger policing, improved community safety initiatives, and greater collaboration between law enforcement and local structures.
As the Cele family was laid to rest, mourners were left not only with grief but also with unanswered questions and a renewed plea for justice. While the funeral offered a moment for closure and collective mourning, the pain of the loss remains raw. For the family and the wider community, healing will depend not only on time, but on seeing accountability and meaningful action to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
